Chapter 20--How to Make a Magical Photoshoot

With so many photoshoots in the works, I thought it would be helpful and interesting to create a guideline for making magical photos.

Here are some thoughts I put together. Maybe you have some to add.

How to Make a Magical Photoshoot:

1. Decide to have a photoshoot. Setting the intention and from there you can fill the space.

2. Choosing a purpose. Is this for an event, to show a person's essence, to celebrate, to play, to showcase a business or product or just for fun.

3. Develop a theme. Choose images that inspire you and decide on emotions you want to convey. For example, beach or city theme with moody or joyful emotions, etc.

4. Choose wardrobe that will enhance your person, purpose and theme, not compete with it.

5. Decide if props will help you clarify your purpose and theme. Will this express a symbol that means something to me or the viewer?

6. Take time for yourself--feeling extra pampered adds a wonderful glow, feeling good about yourself always brings others joy as well.

7. Remove stressful elements from your life as much as possible the day of.

8. Enjoy yourself. Once proper preparations have been made, it is important to leave expectations behind and let the day create its own magic from your plans. Trust that your photographer will capture your magic with their knowledge of photography, lighting, editing and above all, understanding what you want to express in that creative flow.

May every photo be magical,

Juliet

Chapter 19--What to do when you're not feeling very magical

Sometimes for whatever reason, the magic is just not there. You know what I mean. Things aren't flowing, you feel a stormy cloud over your soul, good luck is sprinkling daisies on the other side of the fence. The number one reason people don't take photos is because they don't feel very magical (beautiful, happy, joyful, and on and on), but essentially they are saying, I've lost my magic and what makes a photo so mesmerizing, so awesome is that spark of a person's soul, sooo...

How do you get that magic back?

1. Don't expect it to come back in one day. That'd be cruel. That's just fuel for you to beat yourself up more.

2. Usually it's because you're being too hard on yourself. Celebrate yourself a little. When was the last time you did something nice for yourself?

3. Besides being nice to yourself, you need to find what makes you smile. Make a list and start incorporating those things in your life right now.

4. Play! There is no flow, without play. I'm not talking about getting crazy trashed. I'm talking about mindful activities that you enjoy. Go exploring a museum you've never gone to, savor a treat from your childhood, listen to music you love and draw what it makes you feel. Make a "play" list, things you think sound fun, but you have never allowed yourself the luxury of doing. (now you are starting to see why you've not had that magic flowing)

5. Once you've done one nice thing for yourself every day for 3 months, you start to change a little. Don't be impatient until the 3 month mark.

6. This is where the magic that's been under the surface can start to bubble up to the fresh light of day! You don't feel as grumpy or mournful, you look fresher, more lovely

and then taking photos isn't just a guilt-ridden chore. It's just an extension of your magic.

If the idea of "play" is still a challenge, have a look at this TED talk on the subject here

P.S. The promotion to say Thank you to my Clients for 3 Amazing Years is running until July 25th, 2017 to get 50% off pretty much all photography except weddings. I probably won't do this for another year. Message me to get a really sweet deal.

Chapter 17--A Date For Yourself

I have been reading a book called "The Artist's Way". It is about reconnecting with that innate creativity that we all have within us.

Something the book recommends is called "An Artist's Date". This is a few hours every week that you set aside to be by yourself, do something that inspires you. This is not supposed to be practical or productive. It is simply an opportunity to "fill the well" of inspiration.

Creativity needs room to breathe, not demanded of to produce.

Great article here

Great article here

Today I put this into practice. I took myself to Old Town Orange, a place I've done a lot of photoshoots, and I let myself wander and roam and be inspired with no agenda, no plan.

It made me realize some things. First, the energy and magic of a photoshoot really does turn the "everyday" into something else altogether. Not having a subject to photograph or photos to create, I felt the pulse of everyday life. Second, it allowed me to brainstorm with greater clarity and joy.

Beyond the needs of photography for special events. I am a strong encourager of creating experiences within the realm of photography.

Want to ride a horse on the beach? Why not have it captured on camera?

Want to dress up like one of your heroes? Why not have a professional photo of that?

Want to document your life? Why not have an album with highlights from each month of your year?

Thank you for joining me in my ever-growing pursuit of how we can cherish our lives and stories more thoroughly and joyously through photography.

Chapter 16--The Place that Magic Lives

I don't know about you, but it's easy for me to get tossed in the shuffle of our fast modern life. I'm an old soul and I like things with a story, with presence, with longevity.

When I start to feel that pressure of modern life pressing in, pushing with an agenda, a list, I make time for it, I put it in its place and then...

A deep breath and all that follows...

is where the magic happens.

What do I mean by magic?

I'll show you.

With wedding photography, there is a standard, an expected list of shots that as a professional I am expected to capture. The couple together, the ceremony, the rings, the bridal party, family, the cake cutting, you know this stuff. This is all good and important..and I put my heart into every capture.

But here is the deep breath, and all that follows.

The candid shots, the look in the father's eye of pride, the words he will never say, the electrifying energy as they dance, the wild, raw, authentic moments you may never see. The magic for me, is in those secret, elusive moments, that happen within 1/2500 of a second, 1/80 of a second, faster than a blink of the eye.

And now through the photos, you can see what you couldn't see with your eyes and feel something you never felt and even, travel back in time.

For me, my friend, that is MAGIC.

Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I take that breath and search for the moments that will last forever.

Chapter 14--What you love, captivated

This Sunday is Mother's Day as we are all aware. I am all for flowers and cards and spoiling with gifts, but take a moment to have a selfish thought:

"How do I want to remember mom?" (or a special person like a mom)

(If your mother has passed, like mine has, then please skip this part if it is painful)

Did she love to play the piano, was she a doctor, a fantastic cook, did she love to watch tv and drink wine? Do you have a photo of her doing these things?

I find now that the photos I have of my mother doing things are so interesting to me.  I love and cherish the posed photos, but there is something so endearing about seeing her in her element, eyes sparkling doing what made her happy.

Here is the selfish moment:

What makes you happy? And do you have photos of yourself doing these things?

How do you want generations beyond this one to see you?

Immediately, I think priorities, I want to be seen as... I want to invest in... Why don't I do x,y,z.

Puts things in perspective quite nicely doesn't it?

Here are some photos of lovely Brey in her element, at ease. A native to Seattle, she is at home with delicious coffee and great conversation. A great window into her life, don't you think?

You may have come across this photo in your life once or twice:

You will be very happy to hear that it is not about harassment but something altogether wonderful. A marvelous adventure.

Read all about it here

Chapter 13--A Bridge

Do you think it's possible to live with joy and ease and still be productive?

This is something I contemplate with Juliet Peel Photography. How to draw a bridge between artistry and business, inspiration and documenting memories.

What brings you immense joy?

What makes you feel at ease?

This weekend I had the opportunity to work with According to Kimberly blogger, Kim Luu on a photo project for her birthday.  Here are some of the results:

Doesn't she simply exude peace and elegance? The sunset was cotton candy pink and the ocean a baby blue on the horizon. The air salty and cool. Not pictured here are a billowing cloud of pink and white balloons, which drew the attention of passers by. But we were in our element, creating images for a purpose and creating art. I learned some new techniques with my camera lighting over the week and I am proud to say, these photos are completely unedited. This is what they look like straight out of the camera. That is joy. That is ease.

It is not always the case, but I am very intrigued by working hard, getting in the flow and following the joy and ease in my heart in the process.

Something to ruminate over.

Chapter 12--Journey Pt 1

This week was a whirlwind of engagement sessions, a family event, a commercial event and all the little headaches and heartaches and triumphs and joy that goes into owning and running a small business. Very grateful for it all, of course. The lessons teach me character and the good stuff brings hope. I also had a chance to paint for a little bit, something I hadn't done in a while. This weekend I plan on meeting with several clients about weddings, attending the marriage of some dear friends and doing a styled shoot on Sunday. And somewhere in there, a nap would be lovely. What are your plans for the weekend?

Chapter 11--Kindness Forever

This week I was able to photograph a birthday party of some dear friends. I am so honored that I have photographed every significant event in this child's life so far. I got to travel to Santa Monica to document an event, the end of a 2,200 mile journey of a veteran named Ernesto Rodriguez, bringing awareness to veteran's suicide. Seeing the kindness of others present was faith-in-humanity-building. I've had the opportunity to get in touch with so many great friends and catch up this week, so that I'm behind in my editing, but I feel so much joy, the editing will probably be 10 x more inspired now. This weekend I will photograph engagement photos, a birthday party, family reunion and a couples portrait and then settle in with friends and drinks on Sunday night. What are your plans for the weekend?

Chapter 10--We Are All Connected

This week I turned 30. Has me all nostalgic and feeling grateful. After several days of birthday-ing and spending time with friends and family, I am ready to continue the next phase of life. Been really loving weddings and enjoying the planning process for photographing some amazing life unions in the next few months. This weekend I will be photographing a wonderful birthday party of some dear friends and spending Easter with family. What are your plans for the weekend?

Chapter 9--Groundbreaking

This week had a test shoot for a fashion company I want to work with, a gorgeous nature-filled engagement session, delivering print boxes and connecting with great people over dinner and planning some great photo sessions. This weekend I will have a family photo session, a beauty session and a small family gathering to celebrate us April babies. I'll be 30 on the 12th. What are your plans for the weekend?

Chapter 8--Meaningful Connections

This week I had the opportunity to work with a fashion company, still waiting to hear if my images were chosen (wish me luck, por favor). Had lots of meetings and photo reveal sessions and even a few beauty portraits. We had the Social Change photoshoot on Sunday to very intriguing results, I think I found a new art form---social experiments! This weekend will be another test shoot, photo box deliveries and an engagement photo shoot. I hope to have a little time to meditate and light a few yummy candles on Sunday night. What are your plans for the weekend?

Chapter 7--"Cure sometimes, treat often, comfort always"

The Pop-Up Shop was a wonderful success! Great people, building one another up, female entrepreneurship and awesome connections. I'm so glad I got to work with Aly and Breanna on this. Had a chance to work on some great beauty portraiture and catalog photography this week. Wish me luck on some meetings I have tomorrow and Saturday to hopefully close some fashion photography stuff in the works. Sunday night is our Social Change photoshoot. This is a personal project intended to show the power of simple human connection through photography. What do you have planned for this weekend?

Chapter 5--The Exciting Zone

Jessica of Jessica Caruso Fitness

This week was filled with portrait sessions and portrait reveal sessions, interviews, behind the scenes with Freddy Talks, planning for two events this month and most importantly, having fun in the process. Yes, there are crazy moments, but that's when you take a step back in the comfort zone, take a breath and then leap back into the joyful fray. This weekend will be portrait sessions, two birthdays and hopefully a little time to continue playing with this new absolutely awesome retouching software. (new levels of beautiful portraits) What are you doing this weekend?

This week I've been meeting with amazing clients and companies. Each person a universe unto themself. Editing photos, styling photoshoots, learning new techniques that improve my photography. I hope to have a little quiet time this weekend to meditate and reflect on this week's lessons and victories. What do you have planned?

Chapter 3--The Magic of You

Weekly Update for Juliet Peel Photography:

It's been a lot of photo-editing and meetings kind of week! We did get a chance to attend the Brea Centennial Celebration at the Brea Gallery last Saturday and met Dennis Rodman and actually gave him and his girlfriend a ride to their car afterwards. #randomsaturdayinoc I guess ;) We also got to see our friend, Josh Newman and daughter, Cecily. Freddy made a great video about it, if you are curious to see. I was able to connect with Sarah Bond of Grace and Gold Events over lunch at Dripp. Hope to have a little bit of time this weekend to walk on the beach and snap a few personal photos. Looking forward to working with all the amazing people I've been connecting with and producing some moving and enchanting portraits next week!
